Roots in the line

Rooter Service & Root Control

Cutting roots restores flow today. Whether it holds for two years or two months depends entirely on the pipe they came through.

Excavated pipe section packed with a dense mass of tree roots
Root mass removed from a failed joint

Rooter work is mechanical: a cutting head goes down the line on a cable and shears back the root mass until the pipe carries water again. It's fast, it's effective, and for a line that backs up once every few years it's often the whole answer.

What we won't do is sell it as a permanent fix without qualification. Roots don't drill through healthy sealed pipe — they enter at cracks and open joints that already exist. Cutting removes what's inside; it doesn't close the door they came in through. So we cut, then we camera, then we tell you what the entry point actually looks like. Sometimes that means you're fine cutting every few years. Sometimes it means the joint is failing and cutting is just deferring a repair. You should get to know which.

Indicators

When this is likely your problem

01Backups that return on a roughly predictable schedule
02Gurgling from the lowest drains in the house
03Mature trees within reach of the sewer line's path
04A previous plumber cleared it and it came back within months
05Slow drainage across the whole house rather than one fixture
06Original clay or cast iron sewer pipe still in service
Scope

What's included — and what isn't

Included in the quote

  • Access through an existing cleanout
  • Mechanical root cutting to restore flow through the line
  • Flush test to confirm the line is carrying water
  • Camera run after cutting to see what the roots came through
  • A plain assessment of whether cutting is a maintenance plan or a stopgap

Quoted separately

  • Installing a cleanout where the line has no usable access
  • Repair or replacement of the damaged joint or pipe section
  • Chemical root treatment products, where you want that applied
  • Hydro jetting, if the line also has grease or scale that cutting won't remove
  • Excavation of any kind
Pricing

How this job is priced

Rooter service is a flat charge per line through an existing cleanout, quoted before we come out. The camera run after cutting is included, because we think you should see what you're dealing with rather than take our word for it. If the footage shows a failing joint, we'll quote the repair separately and you're under no obligation to take it.

Process

What the visit involves

01

Confirm it's roots

Backup timing and the property's history usually point at it, but we verify rather than assume.

02

Cut the line clear

A cutting head sized to the pipe shears the root mass back until flow returns.

03

Camera the entry point

We look at where the roots got in. That's the fact that determines everything about what comes next.

04

Tell you the truth about it

Whether cutting is a reasonable recurring maintenance item or a repair you're postponing.

Service questions

Questions about rooter service & root control

How long will the line stay clear after cutting?

Honestly, it varies from a couple of years to a few months, and the difference is the size of the opening the roots come through. A hairline crack lets very little back in; a badly separated joint refills quickly. That's exactly why we camera after cutting instead of just collecting and leaving.

Do chemical root killers work?

Foaming root treatments can slow regrowth near the point of application, and some people use them as a supplement between cuttings. They don't repair the pipe, they don't reach the whole line, and they're not a substitute for knowing what your joint looks like. Also check what your local rules allow before pouring anything into a sewer line.

Is it cheaper to just cut roots every year forever?

Sometimes, genuinely. If the damage is minor and the cutting is inexpensive, recurring maintenance can beat a repair on pure cost. But that arithmetic changes if the joint is deteriorating, because a failing line eventually collapses and turns a planned repair into an emergency one. We'll show you the footage and let you run the numbers yourself.

Will cutting damage my pipe?

On sound pipe, no — the cutting head is sized to the line's diameter. On badly deteriorated clay or corroded cast iron, aggressive cutting can worsen existing damage, which is one more reason we look at the pipe's condition rather than treating every line the same.
